Moving can be a hassle, but with our checklist you can make sure everything you need for moving day is complete. We suggest starting 4 weeks before moving day to help get you prepared and everything crossed off your list before the big move. Check out our Ultimate Moving Checklist!
4 weeks before you move checklist:
Start early for your big move at least 4 weeks in advance. It’s time to gather all of your important documents you will need for your new place and start getting rid of the things that you won’t be taking with you.
Gather any financial and legal records in one place including: birth certificates, passports, and medical, dental, and optical records for everyone in your home. Be sure to carry these important documents on you to avoid them from getting lost.
Update your voter registration!
Protect all of your valuable and personal belongings by purchasing moving insurance to cover all your belongings during the move.
Start donating items that you can’t make room for such as: frozen foods, bleach, and aerosol cans.
If you plan to relocate to a new state or out of the country, start searching for a new doctor, dentist, and vet in your new neighborhood.
If you’re moving long distance, start booking your hotel and flight.
Set-up your cable, internet, and phone providers and schedule installation and/or cancel your old services.
2 weeks before you move checklist:
You’re two weeks out from your moving day! This is the perfect time to update your accounts and records for your new place and address. These next two weeks are the most important. Prepare for your moving day, cross off everything on your checklist to help make the day of your move less stressful. Trust us, you’ll be glad you have everythingprepared ahead of time for your new home.
Start organizing all of your moving-related receipts and bills. You’ll want to keep a list of moving-related expenses to claim as a deduction at tax time or for reimbursement from your employer.
Don’t waste food! Prep two-weeks worth of meals and use everything in the freezer.
Set up trash removal and recycling for your new home, and cancel your current service.
Stock-up and refill your prescriptions. Update your prescriptions to your new pharmacy.
It’s time to send out your moving announcement!
Forward your mail. Change your address with loan providers, credit cards, banks, and payroll departments. Be sure to update your Social Security benefits within 10 days of moving. Make sure to notify government offices, including the Social Security Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, and the IRS.
Update your homeowners or renters insurance to your new home and change your address for your auto insurance and car registration.
1 week before you move checklist:
1 week to go! It’s time to start organizing all of your belongings, finish packing, and tidy-up your old home.
Before scheduling your final walk through, fill nail holes with a bar of soap or toothpaste.
Prepare for rain or snow for your moving day.
Any essential items you may need in the next 24 hours, pack a bag that you will keep with you.
Clean your new place. Your new homeowners will thank you later for this kind gesture and most landlords will require you to have your place clean in order to receive your security deposit back.
Moving day checklist:
Moving day is here! Everything should be marked off of your moving list and you are ready to go! Wake up early, have a great breakfast and start the day off right and get moving.
Set an alarm and wake-up early to start early on moving day.
Protect your floors and carpets during the move with a blanket or plastic.
Be sure to tip your movers. They’ve worked hard to protect your belongings!
